Today being yet another wet November Sunday in the Dordogne one has to try and be a little creative. Having guests overnighting with us we had a good opportunity to experiment with a recipe which utilises lots of local produce. Lesley headed for our Victorian bookcase where two shelves creak under the combined weights of Delia Smith, Eliazabeth David, Rick Stein, Ken Hom, Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall etc. Having plucked a copy of Delia Smith's Complete Cookery Course off the shelf we set about date, apple and walnut loaf found on page 601.
Where Delia lives
We are extremely lucky round these parts in being able to source all this lovely Dordogne cooking material. We decided to keep things in a South West France vein and swop Delia's dates for Agen's prunes, otherwise we followed the instructions implicitly. Into the lovely mixture based on some beautiful brown Muscavado sugar and flour went a handful of apples gathered from a neighbours garden followed by a good four ounces of yet another neighbours' golden walnuts.
En attaque!
Later in the evening the cake was cut and served up with some freshly ground coffee and a small tablet of dark chocalate. The cake embodied all the tastes and flavours of a fruitful autumn. This is definitely one to pack into your rucksack when you decide to go yomping on a sharp December day. You're still the boss Delia!
The guests loved it!
