A chilly day in Perigueux

Well the clocks go into reverse tonight as we head towards Christmas and all things festive, therefore it seemed somewhat strange today to be engaging in our last gîte changeover of the season in Bergerac.  We manage several gîtes for clients on a seasonal and annual basis.  Reading the visitors' comments was fascinating and perhaps another example of global warming in action.  “Had a fantastic week blessed by great weather and spent a great deal of time on the tennis court”.

We returned home via Perigueux on the N21.  Lesley was searching for some suitable footwear to exercise around the fireside.  She has had a yearning for some French made Charentaise slippers ever since our French ‘placo-plâtrier’ turned up for work one day in a pair with a fetching gold stitched anchor crest adorning the fronts.  He obviously believed they were “le must”, the term for a “must have” item and should therefore be worn at all times, or maybe he just couldn’t be bothered to change after a night on the Pastis.

The deal is done

We located a pair of the much sought-after Charentaise slippers manufactured by Rondinaud in the town of La Rochefoucauld in the Charente, opposite one of our favourite Perigueux cafés.  A short crossing of the main thoroughfare took us to the bizarrely named ‘Garden Ice café’.  As far as I can see there is no garden and other than the few chunks of ice floating around in the odd glass of Pepsi not a lot of ice either.  Still, on a cold October day the very name has you reaching for your hat and scarf.   Despite this we cosied ourselves into a corner and supped on a couple of glasses of demi-pression.
