Portes Ouvertes - Graves

After packing our bags and saying our ‘au revoirs’ to our hosts we finally left our Edward II stronghold and began our departure from the Sauternes.

A little further north on the left bank we came to a Graves château, Château de Leyre, operating its ‘Portes Ouvertes’ weekend.  So this being a Sunday we were in luck as far as buying some decent Graves was concerned.  We were ushered into the inner sanctum by Madame Bosca a very elegantly dressed lady,  viticultrice and owner of the château.  We spent a very pleasant hour socialising with passing French people out on a social jolly, all of whom Madame seemed to know personally.  We left with far more wine than we intended but felt we had shared in something rather special.  The red wine, Graves 2001 will now sit on our Carte des Vins and be enjoyed by some of our guests who partake of our table d’hôtes.
